On New Years Eve, I went with a group of friends to a popular bar in Sunset Beach, California called Taco Surf Cantina from 6-9 PM. We were there to celebrate what was billed as a “New York New Years.” This is where we on the West Coast could watch the ball being drop in Times Square at 9PM Pacific Time and make it an early night.
Taco Surf was jammed packed with a great classic rock band named “Party Jones.” People were dancing and carrying on right from the get-go at 6 PM! It was so noisy in that place that you couldn’t really hear the words of what people were saying unless they were screaming in your ear. So communicating with body language (facial expressions and hand gestures) was the primary and almost exclusive mode.

That scene at Taco Surf Cantina really illustrated my favorite piece of advice for everyday communication success and that is to set the tone by “Smiling when you speak.” This simple practice will achieve the following desirable outcomes:
